History of Engineers Week in Chattanooga...
National Engineers Week was founded in 1951 by the National Society of Professional Engineers. It is always celebrated at the time of George Washington's birthday. Our nation's first president was a military engineer and a land surveyor.

Chattanooga area engineers have been celebrating Engineers Week or E-Week since 1951 and began bestowing the awards of Engineer of the Year and Engineer of the Decade on local engineers in 1960. In 1979, they began giving an award called the Phillip J. Sutton People to People award to a local individual for his or her unselfish devotion to public service. In 1984, they added an award given to the most outstanding Young Engineer of the Year. In 1994, an award for Technician of the Year was added. In 2009, the Engineer of the Year award was named after Jo Conn Guild, the Young Engineer of the Year award was named after General Robert Neyland and the Technician of the Year award was named after Carlisle Jordan, Jr.

Mission of the Greater Chattanooga Area Engineers Week Committee
Be a catalyst for encouraging students to consider engineering or science related fields of study, because engineers make a world of difference.

Goals
  1. Encourage local engineering societies to meet jointly on the Monday of Engineers Week in February, the Presidents day Federal holiday. Select and reserve the joint meeting venue and invite the keynote speaker.

  2. Provide a comprehensive list of local engineering related events and encourage the February event coordinators to avoid scheduling them on the same day.

  3. Celebrate Engineers Week with an annual awards banquet.
